Hospital day 51: baby Jack, an infection, critical period

11/17/10

Little Jack – one week old
He came with a Buckeye stocking cap.  Yay! Jack’s proud parents looked glowing even though they were tired from the long drive. They brought a load of food from her gourmet club friends.  Yum.
-       1000 expressions – we must’ve taken 500 pictures of Jack.
-       First bath – his cord fell off
-       First book – ten little fingers and ten little toes
-       First introductions to po po and gon gon
-       Change in one week
-       Pictures at Rachel’s facebook.
-       Baby smells. Teri has a blanket that still holds his smell.
-       Ben visits but is sick – but gets to visit with his mom on his last day.

An infection
On day 46, she felt off, more tired.  At 3:55, on routine vital sign measures, she had a temperature of 100.3, confirmed by axillary temperature at 101.  By 4:10, she had a one set of blood cultures drawn by her nurse from her PICC line, a likely source of the infection, and, and second set of blood cultures dawn by the lab technician from a vein, and Imepenum antibiotic was started.  15 minutes.  Urgent.  She had a chest x-ray, urine culture.

On day 47, it was a gram positive cocci in chains, a definite positive.  Her line will be taken out, two IV’s started, and antibiotics continued, cardiac echocardiogram.  Her fever spiked up again but it finally broke and she is better.

Her nurse said that this was one of the longest spells of a patient with no white cells (100) went without getting a significant infection. So if was no surprise.

A critical period
- litmus test
- fork in the road
- where to?

From Rob & Sharon, some thoughts

Need your prayers and positive energy – first hurdle is engraftment from her self from saved autologous stem cells that was transplanted on Nov 8.
Now is the waiting to see if her own stem cells will engraft and boost the good white cells to produce.  The waiting period is 10-14 days from the 8th.  If her white cells go up then we will celebrate, if not then we have to make plans and seek more advice.
